This Week.......

Tuesday is the Science Quiz on cells.  Your child should be studying the new material AND their skeletal quiz.  Picture Day is also on Tuesday.  Pictures for our class will be taken in the afternoon.  In my weekly updates I included a link in case you wanted to order online.  On Thursday the Personal Narrative is due for Ms. Nadiaye.
New novel books will go home on Monday.  For the month of October, a formal book report will be due on Oct. 31.  Here is a link to the requirements for this report.  It is a good thing to keep it posted so students can keep in mind what they will be writing about and the literary elements that they need to find while reading.

Conferences are next week, if you have not signed up a conference, please go to

If your child has received a FREE Reading Log week, they may use it at any time.  They will still be required to read, but they will not have to fill out a log for the week they chose. If you are unaware how your child can earn a FREE week, please ask your child.
Have a great Week!

It was great seeing you on Thursday evening!  If you didn't make it, I know who you are! LOL  Those of you that did not make my classroom presentation, I will send home the paper copies that were distributed.  If you have any questions after looking them over, just email me and I will answer them for you.
Math MAP testing is Monday afternoon at 12:30pm.  With the new web based testing I have heard that the results are instant.  I will email you a copy when they include the district averages, and I will have a copy to go over at your conference.  Read is next week Wed. in the am.
The Science Quiz on the skeletal system is Tuesday, I am sure your child has been studying. On Thursday we begin cell structure.  Since we will not have math on Monday, my math class's Unit 1 assessment will be Wednesday and we will start Unit 2 on Thursday.  The new standards are up on the web, so make sure you take a peek.
Your child has ART homework due each Thursday.  I know many were unprepared this past Thursday. I believe Mr. Hancock has homework as well due each Friday.
Next week Wednesday the first book project is due with a half page summary.  I will be sending a list of projects this week.
Have a great week!

Updates

This week is going to be another hot one!  An important change is that the MAP test has been postponed due to technical issues.  This actually works out for the best with the weather being so hot and testing being done in the classrooms with the new web based site.  I believe we should be starting next Monday with the Math test.  (I hope!)

Open House is this Thursday.  I will be sharing information about my classroom starting at 7:30pm in Room 314, and the 5th grade presentation will begin at 8:00pm in the Media Center.

If your child takes an Orchestra Lesson, and this will be the second year with their instrument, they will have a group lesson on Thursdays from 1:20pm-2:20pm besides their regular lesson.  Your child will be missing science and part of library on this day and will need to make sure they find out what they missed each Thursday.  I have not heard about the Band group lesson yet.

Next week Tuesday will be a science quiz on the skeletal system.  My math students will take a short assessment on Unit 1 next Tuesday as well.

I hope to see each of you at Curriculum Night!

A Letter From Mr. Hodge regarding Peanut Free Classrooms

August 2013

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We have a number of students in each grade level this year with severe, life threatening allergies to peanuts, all other tree nuts, as well as their products and oils. Strict avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction. For this reason we must be cautious with all classroom snacks eaten in the classroom and party foods distributed in the classroom for schoolwide celebrations at Halloween, Winter Holiday, and Valentine’s Day.  There will be a NO NUT POLICY for ALL CLASSROOMS at Irving School for the 2013-2014 school year.

In addition, we will be implementing the following food policy concerning foods served at schoolwide celebrations:
  1. All food served to the students must be purchased in a store. No bakery or homemade goods may be brought into the classroom.
  2. The teacher must be given prior notice about any food items being brought into the classroom.
  3. All items must be sent in its original packaging with the listing of ingredients. If the list is omitted the food will not be distributed.
  4. Labels can read in several ways:
  • Nuts are listed as ingredient
  • The label has a “may contain nuts’ warning
  • A warning that the food may have been processed in a facility that contains nuts

Please be advised that our lunchroom is not a Nut Free Zone and that we offer a Nut Free Table for children with nut specific allergies. Friends of children with nut allergies may sit at the Nut Free table if they eat a hot lunch provided by the school lunch program.Parents who send a lunch from home for their child are free to pack the foods of their choice. It is our hope that families CHOOSE to not send foods containing peanut butter or nuts.

We expect to have a wonderful year at Irving with these few accommodations. Since it is easy to forget these concerns if you do not live with them daily, we will send periodic reminders. We appreciate your support and understanding.

Sincerely,

John Hodge

Principal

This Week.......

Our first week of school turned out to be a GREAT start!  Despite the extreme temperatures, students quickly adapted to the classroom environment like they were in my class for months.  I have a wonderful group of students and know we will have a great year.

Please remind your child to bring back their recorders for music.
