Homework assignment from Ms. Noonan

 This went home today

Dear 4th and 5th Grade Families,

This week I went over how to access and use our online library catalog (http://destiny.op97.org).  As I promised the kids, I am sending home a scavenger hunt that will help them practice these skills.  Just in case it gets lost on the way home, I am attaching it with this email.  It is homework and is due next week on your child's library day.
Lara/Sakellaris:  Thursday 9/27
Payton:  Monday 9/24
Williams:  Friday 9/28
Balicki:  Tuesday 9/25
Eng:  Friday 9/28
Tresselt:  Monday 9/24

If you do not have access to the Internet, please do not worry.  Just send me a note and I will go over it with your child here at school. My goal in sending it home is to introduce you to our catalog as well!  This would be a wonderful time to go through the scavenger hunt with your child and help him or her find books that are a good fit!
If you have any questions at all, please respond to me at my email - knoonan@op97.org.

Thank you!

Art Message from Ms. Tague

4th and 5th Grade Sketchbook Assignment 2012/2013

  • Students are required to turn in one sketchbook drawing per week.
  • Mrs. Tague will give a drawing assignment each week during art class. Assignments will also be posted on the "Sketchbook" bulletin board in the art room and on http://irvingartclass.blogspot.com.
  • If a student is absent for an art class they are still responsible for the assigned drawing and must turn in 2 drawings the following week during art.

  • Mrs. Tague will check and grade the drawings during class each week.
  • Students report card grades each trimester are a combination of the student's sketchbook, class artwork and participation.

STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING THEIR SKETCHBOOK TO ART EACH WEEK.*
*NOTE: Students will be making their own sketchbooks in art, they will not need to purchase a sketchbook.
When is a drawing complete?
  • Did you fill the whole page with your drawing?
  • Did you take your time and do your best work?
  • Did you include details?
Drawing tips:
  • Spend at least 15 minutes on each drawing. Time yourself.
  • Draw the assignment you were given for the week.
  • Add lots of details.
  • Practice drawing techniques you’ve learned in art class.
  • Don't wait until the last minute before art class to finish your drawing!
Sketchbook Drawing Grades:
E = Excellent. The drawing was completed on time and very well done.  It is clear that the student spent a lot of time on the drawing and went beyond what was required.
S = Satisfactory. The drawings is completed on time. It is obvious that student put some time and thought into the drawing.
NI = Needs Improvement. The student did not complete the drawing on time. The drawing looks rushed, shows little effort. The drawing does not represent the student’s best work.

This week

 Happy Mother's Day!

Tomorrow is the MAP reading test.  Please talk to your child about taking their time and doing their best.  Julian will be looking at these scores, as well as the ISATs,  to determine placement for your child.

There are many students that did not turn in permission slips and money for Tuesday's trip to the History Museum.  Please have your child bring that to school on Monday.

Academic Fair

Academic Fair Presentations are Due tomorrow.  If your child is not in the fair, they will present to their classmates tomorrow during science.  Students in the fair will present to their peers in the afternoon.

Students coming back in the evening should be at school no sooner than 6:20 p.m.  The Academic Fair begins at 6:30 and ends at 8:00 p.m.  Students will be required to take their presentation boards with them at the end of the evening.  Students in the evening fair will have no math or nightly reading required from me, I don't know about Mr. Packer's gang.

If you have any questions, please feel to email Ms. Creehan or me.

Parent Orientation at Julian

April 17, 2012

Dear Future Julian Family:

Very soon your child will be leaving the elementary school and entering Percy Julian Middle School.  The staff and I are excited to welcome you to the school with an orientation meeting on Monday, May 14, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

During the orientation, parents will be given an overview of the sixth grade experience, curriculum, teaming, after-school activities (co-curricular), electives, and more.  As you know, your fifth graders visited our school in February for their very own “getting acquainted with Julian MS.”  Now it is your turn!

This year’s orientation will be divided into three parts.  Parents will first gather in the auditorium for a presentation from the school administration and members of PTO.  A general overview of sixth grade will be offered by the administration with PTO members speaking about “Myths You May Have Heard.”  For the second segment of the program, parents will visit classrooms to hear from sixth grade teachers about the curriculum, a typical day in the life of a sixth grader, advisory, and other related topics.  Finally, parents are asked to come together in the commons for  an opportunity to interact informally with each other and gather additional information related to electives and co-curricular activities.

Should you be unable to attend on May 14th, a packet of information will be sent with your name on it to your elementary school.

Entering the middle school will be a new experience for many parents, and we are anxious to make this transition work smoothly for both you and your child.  We very much look forward to seeing you on May 14!

Sincerely,

Victoria E. Sharts
